New pontooner in SW PA

#1 Post by Marathon » Sun Aug 14, 2011 1:46 pm

Hello, everyone. I have been lurking for a while, but figured it was time to introduce myself, since my girlfriend and I will be picking up our new (to us) pontoon on Thursday, and I'm sure I'll have lots of questions over the next few weeks. We rented a 24' Bennington when we stayed at Deep Creek Lake, MD, last month, and caught the fever, bad. So, after some searching, we found a 1999 Suncruiser Trinidad 22', with a 90hp Evinrude (yes; the dreaded FICHT; I'm hoping that since it has lasted this long without giving the previous owners any problems that it might be free from the traditional issues - everyone cross your fingers) and a tandem axle Hoosier trailer. The decor is a little dated, but in very good condition, and our plan is to enjoy it as is for the rest of the summer and do some modernizing/upgrading of the furniture, etc. this winter. We will be trailering it for this season (Deep Creek Lake, MD; Cheat Lake, WV; Youghiogheny River Lake, PA), and then getting a slip at Cheat Lake next summer.

Scott

First off let me "welcome you to the site". I've been to two of the three boating areas you mentioned you are going to frequent. Way back when we first started pontooning Cheat Lake was one of the first places we visited though it's now been quite a few years since we've been there. One thing that stands our clear in my mind is our experience trying to load our boat there after our weekend on the water. We had one hell of a time doing it and one hell of an audience just standing around seemingly enjoying our difficulties. But it is a nice place overall especially the upper end with a view of coopers rocks. Wish I had some photos of some of the steps seemingly to heaven that some folks had built to their private docks down on the lake. The creative ingenuity itself was something to admire. As far as Deep Creek goes we found it OK but people appeared to be a bit to much the uppity stuffy class to appeal to our general tastes, but to each there own. Hopefully you'll enjoy the rest of the boating season without difficulties on your new purchase.

I believe the only time I have ever been in Vandergrift was to go to the drive-in theater there. Probably been five years or so ago.

Congrats on the new (to you) boat.

I also got an older pontoon just this year, and like you, I am using it as much as I can right now and plan on updating over the winter.

You're gonna have a lot of fun on that thing!!
