Tubing behind your toon....where do you hook up?

#1 Post by sammtoon » Thu Jan 29, 2009 10:26 am

This coming up season will be our first one using the tubes with the kids. I know the best place to put the rope is on a ski pole....well I don't have one and honestly don't feel like spending the money on one right now(haven't ck'd prices) but I have heard that can cost a good bit. Anyway I a slider tie rope, you know where it can be hooked up behind the boat on you hooks (one on each side of boat) then there is a pully in the middle and this is where you hoo your rope to. My question is where is the best place to hook the slider rope to? I have read where you should not hook to the eyes that are welded to you tubes...ok so where else then? Any ideas?

I bought one of these, it works well and clips to the two outside rear cleats...

not sure the price of poles but these pics show the mount that was already on my toon its made from 1.5" square steel bolted to transom deck area It keeps the rope way outta the water. wish I had a better pick of mountingarea, wouldn't think it would cost too much to have made. We are going down to check on the floater and to place the new (to us) trailer on the lot on Saturday. Will try and get better pic then.

Mike,
Thats what I bought last year, I haven't hooked it up yet but I was thinking that where they would need to be hooked on the toon.

curtiscapk,
Yah if you can grab a picture of how yours is hook up that would be great, thanks for the help guys!
Also curtiscapk how does that 115 Merc work on your 24ftr? I just bought a 75HP, but I found a 115 that I am actually going and picking up this weekend. I will sell the 75...I haven't even installed it(wife pissed), just wanted to know how well it pushes your toon, since I have a 24ft as well. THanks

I use a bridal like mike has and hook it to the cleats in the back. Would love to have a tow bar but have been quoted prices ranging from 500+ to almost 1000 bucks. Lotta cash for something I bet you could have fabricated at a shop.

One interesting note though. I asked the guys that fabricated my top if they would make me a tow bar and they said no. Too much liability.

Thats what we use too.
You just hook it to the 2 'eye's welded at the top of each toon. Those eyes can actually support the weight of the toon, so more then strong enough....

Sammtoon,

I have actually only had it out once last year, doesn't have a speedo but got gps for Xmas I'm gonna use this year my Bro an experienced captain thought we were doin around 26. Will verify first trip out. We had a lotta weight and 9 people aboard. 7 adults and 2 kiddies. And my massive tool box since it was first trip out and hadn't had much luck on the first try (spun prop). I know its much faster than my bros 50 hp on a 20 footer.

I don't think they recommend using the hooks welded on as they made for a straight lift not for side to side forces and you could cause a crack to form there and you get water leaks :2cents worth

how much hp and how heavy are the people are you towing? i have used the eyes on the tubes with no problems. the ski tow bars are too expensive and the tow harness didn't seem to swing as well as the fixed eyes. with only 50hp i didn't have much stress on the rope though.

I'm not curtiscapk, but we also have a 115HP 4s Merc on a 24'. With me, my wife and two teenage daughters, we can run about 23MPH. We have the ski tow on ours. I have a Big Mable tube which is a monster and I can still tow that at 21MPH with my two daughters and catch plenty-o-air over the wakes. My wife had no trouble skiing this year. I even attached a ski rack. This spring before the marina puts the boat back into the water, I will be installing a pontoon waterglide. I hope, it works as advertised and gets me up to 30MPH.

Good luck with the waterglide, a tow bar like that is ideal but I just cant justify the expense at the moment!

Interesting, I would have installed it the facing the other way......with the straight up part mounted next to the sun pad....so that the pressure from the rope would seem to be more evenly distributed.
Just talking out my ass, though.
