We used to use guide pads with our Malibu, every little bit of protection helps.
Hello BobL... we're a long way apart... I live in Shreveport ( actually a little community north of Shreveport called Blanchard ). Keep my boat in a storage building, but just about every weekend we go to the lake, almost always Caddo lake..... every once in awhile, we hit the red river, but the scenery is about the same no matter where you go, and there's so much trash in the red, I just prefer not go there, so 95% of the time we're out on Caddo. Nice to talk to another Louisianian, even if I am a St. Louis born and raised boy... Go Cardinals!!!!!
Somewhat familiar with your neck of the woods (I went to college in Ruston and wife's family is from Coushatta). Hopefully the Cardinals will stay close to the Reds and make the playoffs :biggrin2

The pvc pipes are loose on the metal brackets so they roll when the log rubs against them and not scratch the logs. When you lock the front of the pontoons between the four of them you will not drift and miss the bunks.
The pvc guides on my boat are tight... had to spray the inside of the tubing with a synthetic lubricant and then had to use a rubber mallet to drive the pvc guides down over the metal,so they sure don't spin free. Now I'm searching the net for some good foam covers to install over the guides to protect the boat and the toons... anyone know where I can get a good set of 48" guide covers, please let me know...
I don't know what the diameter is on the pvc guides and I'm still new to the pontoon thing. (Supposed to pick up boat today but, now it's tomorrow) but, as far as foam covers, what about pipe insulation. What I call roll bar padding. I use it to pad roll bars if I'm going to flip a car (I'm a stunt woman, I flip them on purpose, lol) and also have my race car roll bar padded with this. You might be able to get it at your pipe/plumbing store. You can get the thickness you need. Cut it to made a slit down the padding but, you'll have to tape it on with gaffers/duct tape.
This link is just a random link I found on the net. I have never bought from them but, I wanted to show a picture of what I'm talking about. Just an idea.

LSVLance - thank you for the link. Those look pretty nice... and I like the fact I can get a set without somebody's name on them... thanks again.

maybe you could glue some carpet or some of that pvc insulation over a couple of pieces of larger pvc pipes that would act as rollers over the tighter pieces of pipe? drill a hole at the top of the smaller pipes and do some kind of cotter pin to keep them from coming off. home made rollers. :donno i have the inside rollers on my trailer, but when they are submerged i can't see them so i was thinking about doing both. what do y'all think?

texaspontoon wrote:I know you already have them on, and you love them, but you have a VERY nice new clean boat. I have to tell you, those will scratch the sides of your toons if you keep them on there. I tried the kind you have, and with a little wind at the dock you will start rubbing on them going on and off the trailer. I purchased the ones that go on the inside of the tubes (see photo and link) I got a set of four and they make it so easy without sticking out so far, and without scratching your toons. The reason I had to sand and polish my tubes was because I had sharkhyde on them, then those PVC guide ons scraped the and scratched the tubes, causing the metal to go grey and foul the scratches, leaving big ugly dark grey lines down the sides of my toons.

Like I said, you have a VERY nice looking boat, and these would help keep it that way. They work great I promise.

When I picked up the boat last week I finally noticed the trailer didn't come with the trailer guides. My brother-in-law has the same ones that texaspontoon was referring to (they were included on his trailer). They make loading fairly simple. I'm seriously thinking about ordering these soon. Does anybody have any new insight on these guides. Thanks.

skeptic - How wide is your tri-toon?

Mine is 8 1/2, outside brackets make the rig too wide. But you also need to worry about inside lifting strakes catching on too short of an inside guide.

I suppose this is too redneck for you guys but my trailer guides are just 2" schedule 80 electrical conduit with standard 90 sweeps.
The toons are inside the rub rail so I don't have the scrubbing toon problem.

Mine is 8.5 ft also. I'm not looking for outside guides just the inside guides between the tubes.

According the the ad on the website it states: "Pontoon boat guide ons are angled back to prevent damage with aluminum fins and other performance features on your pontoon tubes."

Make sure you get the right heighth. Too short and yo cannont see them and you can actually "land" your lifting strakes on them if you have to retrieve the boat deep. Too tall then the underskining may rub when you are launchiing.
