Maybe it's because of me not knowing anything different, or my youthful age of 28

but I have never had a problem with unhooking the strap from the bow eye by myself, while on the boat after I ensured it was running alright. This seems to work very well for us, and only takes about 5-10 seconds.
BTW, our bow eye is about 2 feet back from the front of the boat, much like CurtiscapK's is.

Our first toon (89 Landau/Voyager Franken boat) had the eye right on the front of the deck
our next toon (2007 Premier Sunsation LTD 2 log) had the eye back under the deck, but I was able to reach back under to it laying down on the deck.
our current toon (2010 Premier Sunsation LTD PTX) has the eye on the front of the center log.
