Engine Height For 200 HP Tritoon

#1 Post by jserr68594 » Tue Aug 08, 2017 7:54 pm

I am trying to determine if my outboard motor is at the correct height or if I should adjust it. I have a 2006 Premier PTX 225 Legend. The boat is 22.5' long. The center tube is a full length 30" PTX toon.

The boat has a 200 HP Suzuki engine. I see 5800 RPM@ 45 MPH with a 18.5 Pitch Suzuki prop. The boat does porpoise around the upper 30's and above. This is with two people at the rear of the boat and nobody in the front lounges. Also, the 50 gallon fuel tank is near the rear of the boar in the center toon.

If I trim all the down (Negative trim) the boat does not porpoise at all under these circumstances.

Is this normal? Should I adjust my engine height?

Thanks for the input in advance!

Looks perfect where it is! I'd leave her alone. For a 30" PTX with a 200, looks like you are right where you should be.

Thanks for the quick reply. Would you say my porpoising at high speed when not trimmed all the way down is the nature of the beast?

Yes any boat will begin to porpoise when trimmed too high...

As to height on transom it looks just right. It is generally desired to be able to see the anti cav plate while at speed and we can see yours...

If you can get it to porpoise then there is room to lift the engine higher BUT you may start loosing grip quicker while cornering. To me it looks mounted just right the way it is. My pontoon start to porpoise also when the trim gauge is halfway between level and the 1st positive mark, letting her bounce the bow a little gives me my best speed.

Pontoons don't propose nearly as bad as fiberglass boats. But when they do, trim the engine down slightly for you most efficient cruise. Leave the height alone unless you have a serious ventilation as your rpm's are good.

I personally think you need to drop it one hole.
You want the motor plate even with the bottom of the center toon.
If you can change it easily do it and give it a test run.

It's that danged water bottle. Loose it and all your porpoising will disappear :happy
