Re: Horsepower vs. boat load capacity help
I have no idea. I guess its the same prop that came with the engine and boat. What would be a good pitch for this boat??

Re: Horsepower vs. boat load capacity help
ORAA1997, is your toon an I/O or an Outboard?
You have I/O in your sig, but then list a 115 outboard right below that..
I thought the only I/O engines Sun Tracker put in their toons was the 135 hp mercruiser, which is what i have.
There is no single answer to your question, ORAA1997. The answer is 'it depends'.
You need to find out the best prop for YOUR toon.
You first need to find out what WOT RPM is on your engine. Look it up in your manual.
Thats Wide Open Throttle.
Next look on your toon and see what you have. It will be stamped into the prop somewhere..
Mines a 16x13, 16 being the diameter and 13 being the pitch. (Im about to goto a 16x11)
Then you need to get out on the lake and go full boar(WOT) and see if you are able to reach the WOT RPM that was in the manual.
If not, then you need to try another prop, one with less pitch.
Every 1 degrees less in pitch = a gain of about 200 rpm.
Once you have this set right, it will be as fast as your toon will go.
Dont expect to beat a 150 hp bass boat though... heh
So, the prop that works for YOU will be the one that allows the engine to reach WOT.

Re: Horsepower vs. boat load capacity help
I was curious about the i/o or outboard myself. If it has a 115 mercury then its not an i/o

I thought the 1st. number was the dia. and the 2nd. the pitch. I have a 13 1/4 x 17, I was told the 17 was my pitch.WaltF wrote:ORAA1997, is your toon an I/O or an Outboard?

How fast is crawling in the water that you refer to?
Cruising the salt waters of East Florida.
Re: Horsepower vs. boat load capacity help
OK I fixed the signature. I will have to check out the prop to see the pitch. Thanks for all the great info. One last thing. Would it be a good idea to test out the props on an empty boat or with a normal load?

Re: Horsepower vs. boat load capacity help
I usually check it out on an empty boat, but think the correct way is with the load you will normally be carrying.

Re: Horsepower vs. boat load capacity help
I have a Yamaha 115 and I have only taken it out once and with very rough water and the throttle not even pinned, I had that baby up to 29mph. I think its all about the conditions.

Re: Horsepower vs. boat load capacity help
Man, I had a reality check this past weekend! I had never been out with the toon heavily loaded. This time I had 1350+ pounds on board. Never got up on the strakes and max speed with best trim and distribution was around 20 MPH GPS, lower in the rough water. I would hate to think what the original 60 HP would have been limited to in this situation.
BUY ALL THE HORSEPOWER YOU CAN UP TO THE LIMIT OF THE BOAT... YOU WILL ONLY REGRET NOT HAVING IT WHEN YOU NEED IT!
It was a great weekend and we are going back this weekend. Hope all of you can get on the water soon.
