water in toon log

#1 Post by phat06 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 11:25 am

Hello fellow toon owners. I recently purchased a used 2001 22 foot Sun Tracker regency party barge. the original owner treated it very poorly. Ive been rebuilding for about 4 months now took it out last weekend and it leans to the left with just the driver in it. I can hear water in the logs so i drilled holes in the rear of both logs welded in fittings for pipe plugs, quite a bit of water came out of the left log and none came out of the right. I can move the toon around while its still on the trailer and hear water sloshing around in the front. My question is do the logs have a seperator in them? I made sure i tilted the toon back far enough to get the water to flow to the back. how do i get the water out from the front. There are plastic plugs in the top, but there in the middle of the logs.

I dont know why they would have a seperator in them but sounds like yours probably does. Im not the best guy to ask this question though.

You probably have separate chambers if there are top plugs on each section. Just use a siphon hose.

Like doc said, if you have more than one nylon plug on top of the logs, you most likely have separate sealed chambers. I would open each chamber and listen for s swoosh of air coming out. If you hear that swoosh, that chamber is OK. The ones that don't are the ones with the water. To make sure, drop a fishing weight on a string down each chamber until you hear it hit the bottom. Pull up and check for moister.
To get the water out use some kind of siphon hose. I used a boat fuel hose in reverse to get the water in my tubes out.

That's why forums are so great. The more you read the more you learn. Helps eliminate the burn and learn method.
The majority of logs out there fall into three category's. U shaped filled with foam, sealed chambered and baffled chambers. The last two types have separators that keep the log from completely filling with water in case you rip a hole in one chamber. That's what makes a pontoon almost unsinkable.

I wish my pontoon would get done at the mechanic I want to use it for the first time!!! BTW the pontoon on my avatar is not my toon lol its one i snagged pictures from a craigslist ad for sale at 400 bucks lol. a little home built.

I use a 12 volt pump from harbor freight to pump the logs out. I was wonder what can be used to seal the logs, would marine tech work or is there a good caulk. I know welding is the best but it can be expensive.

If you have access to a Helli arc machine and apparently you do as you welded in drain plugs, drill a small hole in tube and drain water. I would then use air hose to apply a small amount of air pressure and soapy water to try and find where the water got in and then weld up both holes.
I have a friend that has one of those two man bass boats that gets water inside between the hulls. He has drilled holes all over that thing and later plugged them with screws. Since there is little pressure it doesn't take much to seal a small hole.

Here is a cutaway of my baffled Premiere log. Note the vent tube on top rather than a sealed bung. It will allow water to flow from front chamber to rear (I proved it :lol3 )

Excellent picture of a baffled chamber tube. :thumbsup And what is a bung? Besides what I'm thinking.

I think you already answered your own question.

I think the word came from Ye Olde wine and beer barrels which were sealed with a cork hammered into the pour hole, aka known as a bung and a bunghole.

Of course, B&B would probably make reference as a cork hammered into my POOR hole. :smoke

yeah, i believe the "separate" chambers have an air passage between them. so one "whoosh" when you open a top plug, but you need to check the bottom of each chamber for water.

Multi bungs + sealed chambers = multi swooshes
