Well don't this suck

Based on the serial number you provided, I believe your unit is the 3-jaw reverse clutch style. Ours is the upgraded 6-jaw reverse clutch and the only way you could use our lower is if you replaced the shift shaft which would require you to remove the power head. The 12 is referring to the number of teeth on the pinion gear not the splines on the driveshaft.

Thank you for contacting SEI.

so my local mercury service marine ( thats 40 miles from closest lake!) says he will look at the old one for 50 bucks he said it sounded like a pin may have sheared. To install the new 200 dollar shift shaft you have to pull the powerhead. CRAP! So I think I'll take it in to him and see how bad it really is. :prayer

What was the original problem? I have spent some time in that type of lower unit. There is really not a lot in there but every part is big buck$.
Pulling the power head is not really that big a deal. I am not sure what the difference is in the shift shaft tho.
Are you converting from "turn" to "up and down" like the guy with the 50 (adjusting nut in the shaft)

I imagine that is more than just a shaft.

Ok. Forward Reverse and clutch all worn down :censored :censored :censored

The mechanic stopped added up parts at 900. I checked online and found everything to rebuild lower unit. Gears, seals, and water pump for 750, he will put it together for 250.

I have three choices.

1. Rebuild original lower unit = $1000 bolt right up.
2. Order sei and shift shaft = $1000 and maybe 2 days labor. 3 year warranty
3. Ebay L.U. blown power head looks like new = $550 bolt right up.

what would you do? Money is an issue!
